An incomplete cast copper-alloy 'Door Knob' spear butt of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. 200-300 AD or 500-600 AD. The object consists of a hollow sub-conical butt-end with a sub-circular rim, which tapers into a hollow open-ended cylindrical shaft which has a broken terminal. In profile the butt has straight walls until it flares out forming a bulbous base with rounded sides and a slightly flattened base which is damaged on the rim. The spear butt does not appear to have any decoration. The object has a mid to dark green coloured uneven patina.

The spear butt is a 'door-knob' type which were once thought to be Iron Age in date, however they are now known to be of either Roman or Early Medieval date. They are relatively common finds in Ireland and moulds are known from northern Scotland (cf. PAS database record: HAMP-EFC828). Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database: YORYM-35C9E7, SUSS-A44691 and LANCUM-6374C1.

The butt has a height of 31mm, thickness: 1.77 mm (walls of the butt) and is 30.95mm in diameter. It weighs 19.9g.
