A copper alloy composite strap end of Medieval date, about AD 1330 - 1450. The tapering strap end consists of a thick sheet central spacer, with the upper and lower plates. The closed end terminates in a collared acorn knop. The side view shows that the knop is formed from only the spacer, the plates terminating at the collar. At the attachment end, one plate terminates in a zigzag shaped end while the other is square. There is one circular perforation to take a rivet in the centre of the attachment end. Instead of the rivet is a piece of wire passed through the hole and round the end of the strap end 3 times (presumabely originally piercing the woven fabric strap). This wire is probably a later repair. Part of the cloth strap survives between the plates. The strap end has a dark green patina and is not decorated. It is 54.7mm long, 9.9mm wide and 4.1mm thick. it weighs 7.55gm.
A similar strap end, attributed to the first half of the fifteenth century, is illustrated in Egan and Pritchard, 1991, Dress Accessories,1150 - 1450, page 144, number 675. Examples of strap ends with Acorn shaped terminals in the same book range in date from AD 1330 - 1450.
