An incomplete cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (AD 43 - 1650). In plan the spindle whorl is sub-circular and in profile is bi-conical. The central perforation has been started from each side of the object but remains unfinished. On one of the faces the indentation is more pronounced than the other face where it is little more than a small concave impression. Each face of the object is worn and has no visible decoration. The surface of the spindle whorl is cream in colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date precisely. Similar examples of spindle whorls have been found in contexts from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period. However most are typically dated to the Medieval period.
The spindle whorl measures 35.25 mm in diameter, 18.74 mm thickness and weighs: 134.5 grams.
