Medieval wheel thrown Humber Ware (1275-1500) base sherd of a small drinking jug. The fabric is hard fired with a rough feel and moderate sandy and micaceous inclusions. The fabric is a dark blue grey with oxidised orange margins. The base interior displays wheel thrown marks, and a thumb press mark can be seen on the exterior with knife trimming. These small drinking vessels usually have only a few splashes of glaze (Jennings 1992, 29), however this sherd has a light green yellow slip on its exterior and base, worn in places. The sherd is 47.48mm in length, 28.26mm wide, 6.43mm thick and weighs 34.19g. The vessel base has a diameter of 60mm, with 38% of the base present.

An example of one of these Humber Ware jugs was found near Selby housing a coin hoard dating to the 1480s (Jennings 1992, 29), and can be viewed on the Yorkshire Museum online database: Ryther Hoard.

Initial sherd identification by Adam Parker: Assistant Curator of Archaeology, Yorkshire Museum.
