A copper-alloy Post-Medieval hooked tag of Read's Class D Type 6. It is composite in form with trefoil shaped front and back plates, between which is held the hook and sewing lug. The front plate has a trefoil of domed bosses that are very worn but appear undecorated, the edges of the plate decorated with multiple small notches. The back plate is flat and of equal size to the front plate. Visible between and held in place by the two plates, and visible particularly prominently on the back plate, is a separtately cast integral sewing lug and hook. This is formed from a copper-alloy wire and has a small circular loop at the top of the hooked tag, extending to a backwards curving hook at the base, which has a sharp pointed tip. The entire object measures 29.91mm in length, 19.69mm in width, 6.36mm in thickness, and 4.81g in weight.
This is a hooked tag of Post-Medieval date. It falls into Read's Early Post-Medieval Class D Type 6 hooked tags characterised by their trefoil shaped plates. No identical examples with one pieces loop and hook are noted in Read, although a number of hooked tags of identical form and with similar function are published by him (Read, 2008: pp. 75-81). These indicate a likely c.16th century AD date for the current example.
