An incomplete copper alloy trumpet brooch of Roman date (AD 75-175). The brooch is missing the curl of the catchplate and the majority of the wire pin due to old, abraded breaks. The object is composed of a concave head with a single centrally positioned integral lug through which an axis bar, broken at both ends, is fitted. The remains of a pin are looped around the axis bar with six turns of the spring.
The head of the brooch itself is trumpet shaped with a slight circumferential grooved border. From a central point the head tapers to form the circular sectioned upper bow which swells slightly towards an elaborate circular acanthus moulding which is flanked by double banded collars. Extending down from the lower collar is a triangular sectioned lower bow and semi-circular foot.
The metal is dark brown in colour with a smooth patina.
