A copper alloy strap slide or strap loop of unknown date. It is a rectangular loop with an front face that is extended into a plate. The plate has a concave top, rounded sides and a narrower base, making it sub-triangular and possibly zoomorphic, having the appearence of an animal mask. The sides curve backwards slightly. The space within the rectangular loop is filled with corrosion products and white clay or a pebble. Strap fittings like this one were used from the Roman period onwards and since no close parallel has been identified, it is impossible to know the date of this example. The chunky form is similar to Roman examples, but the possible animal face might suggest a Medieval date. The loop is 17.6mm long, 10.7mm wide and 8.8mm thick. The maximum width of the strap was 10.5mm. 3.24g. The metal has a smooth mid green patina.
