BROOCH

Unique ID: YORYM-7347DC

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

An incomplete cast copper-alloy one piece brooch, possibly of Nauheim derivative type, dating from the late Iron Age to early Roman period. The spring mechanism and pin are missing, as is most of the catchplate with an old break near the join between the catchplate and bow. There is no discernible decoration on the bow (possibly worn off), although it has a slightly concaved exterior with a rectangular section, tapering to a spherical foot. There is a slight outward curve of the bow at the foot of the brooch, and it appears to have been bent to one side after manufacture. The surface is worn with a dark green patina. The brooch is 51.58mm in length and the bow is 5.31mm wide, its weight is 5.29g

The head of the brooch is similar to the example SUSS-908DB1, and the bow profile similar to SF-A3173D. The catchplate of this brooch extends halfway up the bow in contrast to the parallel example provided here.

Similar brooches have are described by Hattatt (1982, 59). Further parallels can be found within Mackreth (2011) volumes I and II with images in volume II (9).
