An incomplete copper alloy Trumpet Style Brooch of the Roman period, dating from AD 75 - AD 175.
Approximately 75% of the brooch remains, with the pin, spring and catchplate missing, presumed lost in antiquity. The rest of the brooch is in tact.
The brooch is angular (comma shaped) in profile. The head of the brooch is oval in plan, and tapers into the bow. The reverse of the head is slightly concave. The head loop and plate are present as a broadly semi circular (lozenge shaped) protrusion with a broken circular perforation which would have held a coiled spring and the pin. The bow of the brooch is D shaped in cross section. The head of the brooch is decorated with two circular pellets, there may have been further decoration on the surface, however the detail is unclear. Below this the bow tapers in and back out again to form a collar consisting of three concentric circular ridges, one on top of the other, the middle one protruding further than the others, in between the circular protrusions are semi circular grooves. The bow then tapers in again below the collar and tapers out and in slightly forming a ridge from which the base of the bow continues. The base of the bow is decorated with four rectangular, vertical lines, there is evidence of a scroll work design at the sides of the brooch, however the detail is unclear. At the base of the brooch are three incised grooves forming a collar which then tapers out to form a globular knop. At the reverse of the brooch there is a central ridge running the length of the bow, this would have culminated in the catchplate, now missing.
The brooch measures 48.1 mm in length and is 15.8 mm wide. It has a thickness of 7.7 mm and weighs 12.4 g.
The brooch is a light green in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. Other examples of this type of brooch have been recorded on the database including WMID-B357B9, WMID-31F3E4, WMID-21E722, WMID-A3750D and WMID-48DE24.
