An incomplete post-Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting (c. 1500-c. 1700).
This is a toggle clasp of Read Type 3. The fitting has a flat back and front with bevelled sides and a thickened lobed knop at one end. The knop would have had a domed top but a portion has broken off. Above the knop is a horizontal ridge and groove. Above the groove is a constriction then a ring with a large circular central hole. Beyond the ring the sides are parallel and at the attachment end there is a central copper-alloy rivet.
Length: 27.7mm; width: 9.9mm; thickness: 2.3mm. Weight: 1.88g.
These toggle clasps are thought to be from 16th/17th century sword-belts and hangers (Read 2008: 209, ref: 757).
Compare with HAMP-A37358.
