MOUNT

Unique ID: SUSS-503B8D

Object type certainty: Probably

An incomplete cast copper alloy figural mount, possibly either used to decorate a vessel, furniture or other item, probably Medieval to Post Medieval in date (c. 12th-c. 18th century AD). The remains of the object consist of the upper portion of an angel, siren or similar winged being, with a head, triangular shoulder and torso segment and one large wing stretching upwards from the waist to touch the right side of the head creating a circular aperture where the wing curves. The base of the torso tapers to a point and is followed by a semi-circular terminal. The other wing is missing and possibly further attributes, now unclear due to old breaks and wear. The reverse surface is relatively flat. Although the outer surface is extremely worn, it is clear that the head was decorated with incised lines including two almond-shaped eyes, framed by hair above a prononced forehead; in between the eyes are traces of a nose and possibly a small mouth below. The remaining wing is decorated with incised lines to indicate feathers. It is clear from the broken edges near to where the second wing would have been that the design of this object was symmetrical in plan. No further detail remains. The object has an overall medium green colour with some areas of slightly darker patina. It measures 44.3 mm long, 25.44 mm maximum width, 11.33 mm maximum thickness and weighs 26.46 grams.
