A complete post-Medieval silver 1-real piece in the names of Joanna and Carolus of Spain (1506-1544). Minted at Mexico. Assayer: Luis Rodríguez (1548-67). Initial mark: cross potent.
Obverse: KAROLVS ET JOHANNA REGIS (annulet stops); Shield of Léon and Castille with M with little ring to left side and L to right
Reverse: HYSPANIARVM ET INDIARVM (annulet stops); Pillars of Hercules with waves below, inscription PL/VS/VI across centre (single pellet above VS)
Diameter: 22.8mm. Weight: 3.14g. DA=12:12.
(Calico, Calico, Trigo 1988) is Juana y Carlos, no 167.
Notes:
'It appears that at Mexico the coins continued to bear the names of Carlos and Johanna for some time after the accession of Philip II (1556). The single pellet above VS on the reverse appears to indicate the denomination, because 2-real pieces have two pellets and 4-reals have '4' there' (Pers. comm. Edward Besly, 2/9/2015).
