A base and wall sherd from a small vessel of unknown date, AD 43 - 1900. The sherd is part of the foot ring and part of the wall of a small vessel. The fabric is hard, smooth, fine in texture and white throughout. It has fairly sparse, well sorterd, very small grey inclusions. Traces of a cream / pale yellow grey glaze survives in the groove above the foot. The base has a diameter of about 50mm. It has a foot ring creating a hollow base with a beaded outer edge. The wall projects at about a 45 degree angle. The sherd is 16.9mm tall, 32.9mm wide and the wall is 3.1mm thick. 4.45g.
The finder reports that the sherd has been examined by Chris Cumberpatch, a local ceramic expert, who suggested that it could possibly be Roman. The presence of a glaze does not preclude a Roman date, but does make it less likely, so a Post Medieval date cannot be ruled out.
