A fragment of a copper alloy Roman plate brooch of the Composite type, dating from AD100 - 200. It is in the form of a cross of which only the circular centre and two incomplete arms survive. Each arm is in the shape of a teardrop, the pointed ends joining to the small, central roundel. The face of the brooch is enamelled and a large part of this remains in place. The roundel has a central pellet of corroded metal surrounded by two concentric rings, the inner of orange enamel and the outer light green corrosion again. Each arm of the cross has a dark blue background on which are two lengths of scrollwork in relief metal, back to back. Some of the enamel has lost its colour. The remains of a catch plate can be seen on the underside of the remaining arm. The fragment is 24.5mm long, 15.9mm wide and 4.7mm thick. It weighs 3.19gm.
Composite brooches of this type, though not of this design, are illustrated in Mackreth, 2011, Brooches in Late Iron Age and Roman Britain, volume 2, plate 118 and on page 354 - 355 of Hattatt's Visual Catalogue.
