The remaining portion consists of the lower end of the foot. There are two moulded, transverse ridges across the half-round part at the top of the surviving piece, separated by a wide groove, the upper ridge being broader than the lower. Each ridge is incised with a single, narrow groove. There is an animal-head (horse) terminal below, which has prominent eyes beneath semi-circular eyebrows, a long, moulded ridge for the nose and expanded comma shaped nostrils with a short, flared extension between them. The inner and upper sides of each nostril are moulded and project slightly beyond the edge of the terminal. The flared triangular panal between the nostrils has concave upper sides, decorated with a single row of small, punched crescents forming a border, and a small, pointed knop in the centre of the lower edge. The reverse of the brow ridge of the terminal is concave. A fragment of the catch plate remains in place behind the half round part; the rest of the brooch is missing. The remaining portion has a smooth, dark brown patina. It is 47.3mm long, 20.1mm wide and 5.7mm thick. It weighs 9.82gm.
A similar, more complete, example of this type of brooch is illustrated in MacGregor and Bolick, A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections, Ashmolean Museum 1993, page 101, number 12.15.2015-08-18 09:53:462015-08-25 11:30:35412014-10-192014-10-191Certain11114747PAS55D2F29A00164C722SWYORCopper alloy10627IncompleteEARLY MEDIEVALEMx41022p0gjgrshhcwEARLY MEDIEVALEMx41022p0gjgrshhcwMetal detectorCircaCirca737844594258964352741423SK9289SK9289SK98NW53.38983429-0.61809849263463806100530527PAS_2586_brooch.jpg1685502Early Medieval cruciform broochWest Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service4images/acooper/East MidlandsCultivated landEuropean RegionCountyLincolnshireDistrictWest LindseyCivil Parish53.3922-0.610181HarpswellReturned to finder96665
