A complete copper alloy seal matrix of Early Modern dating (19th to 20th Centuries AD).
The seal matrix consists of a rectangular engraved device and an integrally cast square section shank. The shank gradually tapers to a point. The device consists of the word 'STOCKTON'.
The square sectioned shank allows the seal matrix to be held in a wooden handle.
The seal matrix measures 25.1 mm in length, 33.6 mm width and 5.8 mm. It weighs 20.7 grams.
It is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.
Few seal matrixes of this style have been recorded, but with the shank designed to fit into a wooden handle, it is of Early Modern dating (19th to 20th Centuries AD).
It has been suggested that this seal matrix or stamp is related to that of the Stafford Pottery, Stockton on Tees, Yorkshire. This pottery was run by William Smith & Co between 1825 and 1855, then George Skinner & Co between 1855 and 1870, and finally by Skinner and Walker between 1870 and 1880. All three used a printed or impressed 'STOCKTON' as part of the back stamp. However the size of the stamp is more suggestive that it might have been used by the Stockton Brick company.
