Incomplete cast copper alloy trapezoidal buckle frame which is drilled for a separate spindle, now missing. The remains of the spindle within the frame and the iron corrosion product around the holes suggest that the spindle was made of iron. There is a central ovate knop above each spindle hole where the frame is waisted. The two loops that would have been divided by the spindle are very symmetrical and C-shaped in plan and plano-convex in section, with a rounded external bevel and an angled internal bevel. The base also has an angled internal bevel. The spindle would have held a chape as well as a pin, which are both now missing. The surface has a dark grey patina, and the colour seems to extend throughout, suggesting that the surface is not tinned but that the copper alloy has a higher percentage of tin and perhaps also zinc in it, making it appear more like tombac or gunmetal.
