A complete but worn cast copper-alloy seal matrix of medieval date, circa AD 1300 - 1400. The matrix is shield-shaped with a flat top and smoothly rounded base. A semi-circular lug set on a central raised spine projects from the top edge of the reverse. The die of the matrix depicts a hare riding a hound, the hare holding a hunting horn before it. There is an inscription at the top of the matrix, the first letter of which appears to be a W, but the wear is too great to decipher the legend in full. The design of the hare on a hound was a hunting satire popular on anonymous personal seals of the 14th century. Similar examples can be found in Harvey & McGuinness (1996:89).
