Two Post Medieval (c. 1500 to 1900) lead tokens:

1. The design consists of the initials R - Powell Type 2. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is a matte light grey colour. The token is oval in plan and may be abraded. It measures 21.26mm long, 14.75mm wide, 4.11mm thick, weighs 6.96g.

2. The design consists of a cross with a pellet in each quarter - Powell Type 14. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is rough and is a matte light grey colour with some encrustation. The token measure 19.26mm long, 18.75mm wide, 2.8mm thick, weighs 4.26g.

Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be possibly Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800. Powell (2012) comments that Type 14 is a design which was commonly made stock and occur in large quantities, dating to the late 16th to mid 19th centuries.
