A copper alloy, openwork strap or harness mount dating from the early Post Medieval period, AD 1550 - 1700. It is moulded in the form of an openwork square, subdivided into quarters by an equal-armed cross. From the centre of each side projects a trilobed fan decoration, and the corners of the square are angled to form inverted V shapes connecting the ends of the arms of the cross. The reverse of the mount is flat and carries two integral mounting spikes, both complete but now bent. Both sides of the mount carry traces of a white metal coating. The exposed metal has a dark brown patina. The mount is 42.5mm long, 39.2mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It weighs 11.32gm.
A number of identical mounts can be found on the database, some with two mounting spikes and some with three. Compare for example references SWYOR-BDA790, SOM-9F27F2 and SOM-D2CCB6. This last reference cites Read (2001), page 34, numbers 276 and 277, where these mounts are attributed to the seventeenth century. SWYOR-BDA790 also notes that such mounts are decorated in a similar way to some double-looped buckles illustrated in Whitehead (2003), page 65, which are also attributed to the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
