ANNULAR BROOCH

Unique ID: NMGW-4A1C32

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

The object is a small silver annular brooch with niello decoration on both sides of the frame, which is circular in cross-section. The frame decoration comprises at least three groups transverse lines on both sides, all inlaid with niello. The pin shaft is incised with a 'wriggle work' zig-zag line on each facet. The wrap-around head of the pin securing it to the annular frame of the brooch is plain. There is a small 'bar' at the junction of pin shaft and head (width 5mm), to prevent snagging. The annular frame is distorted. External frame diameters 18.6 x 12.6mm; frame thickness 1.1mm; weight 0.84g. The object has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. To judge from its colour and weight and visual comparison with other silver brooches and related accessories in the collections of the Department of History & Archaeology, the alloy is well in excess of 10% silver. A number of annular brooches with similar pins are known from Wales. They range from small silver stirrup brooches, such as those from Llanfaes (Anglesey), Llanbedr Duffryn Clwyd (Denbighshire) and Abergavenny (Monmouthshire; Redknap 1994, nos 21, 23) to larger brooches from Kidwelly Castle (Carmarthenshire), Crickhowell (Powys) and a site near Cowbridge (Vale of Glamorgan; Redknap 1994, nos 11, 22 and 13). The Lamphey example appears to be slightly smaller than a similar brooch from Llanelidan, Denbighshire (NMW Treasure ref. no. 11.19). Occasionally isolated brooch pins are found, such as one found at Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy, in 2008 (NMW Treasure ref. no. 08.06). These parallels are of thirteenth- or fourteenth-century date, and the Lamphey brooch, on the basis of such comparanda, must date to the same period.
