Three Post Medieval (c. 1500 to 1900) lead tokens:

1. The design consists of a cross-hatching - Powell Type 7. The reverse is undecorated. The surface has a matte oxidised light brown/cream colour. The token measure 18.68mm long, 17.34mm wide, 5.17mm thick, weighs 9.83g.

2. The design consists of an indistinguishable deisgn within a border of pellets - Powell Type uncertain. The reverse is undecorated. The surface is a matte light cream/grey colour. The token measure 16.92mm long, 16.57mm wide, 3.13mm thick, weighs 4.7g.

3. The design consists of a central pellet with numerous radiating ridges protruding from the centre, possibly depicting a cart wheel - Powell Type 3. The reverse is undecorated and the token is incomplete. The surface has a matte oxidised light grey colour. The token is bent slightly forming a V-shape and measures 27.08mm long, 26.32mm wide, 3.37mm thick, weighs 11.49g.

Lead tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as use as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be Post Medieval in date (1500-1850 AD), those which seem to mimic Medieval penny designs are deemed to be possibly Medieval, the remainder which carry stylised designs remain difficult to date but the majority are probably Post Medieval in date c.1500-1800. Powell (2012) comments that Type 3 is a design which was commonly made stock and occur in large quantities, dating to the late 16th to mid 19th centuries.
