A complete, lead alloy, papal bulla of Pope Innocent IV (in office AD 1243 - 1254). The obverse depicts the faces of St. Paul and St. Peter, beneath the inscription SPA SPE, with a cross pattee between them. The faces of the saints are contained within boundaries of small pellets and there is a single small pellet above the upper limb of the cross. There is a boundary of small pellets around the border of the obverse and another around the reverse, within which is the legend INNO/CENTIVS/.PP.IIII. in three lines with an omega above the PP.
The bulla has a well developed cream coloured patina. It is 38mm in diameter and 4.3mm thick. It weighs 36.18gm.
Bullae are discussed in Saunders, 2001, Salisbury and South Wiltshire Musem Medieval Catalogue, part 3, pages 87 - 91. A number of other bullae of Innocent IV can also be found on the database; see for example references YORYM-1C246C, SWYOR-3B1E63 and SF-514565.
