Post Medieval (late 16th to early 17th centuries) strap fitting, in the form of a possible hook: The body of the strap fitting is an inverted drop shape. The lower tip narrows and is curled slightly before it is broken. The body has two integral spikes which are circular in section, taper to a blunt, broken, point. The surface of the fitting has traces of a dark grey- green patina and red copper corrosion. The strap fitting measures 26.35mm long and 11.9mm wide. It weighs 2.3g.
Margeson (1993) illustrates similar examples, Nos. 257 and 258, and dates these to the late 16th to early 17th centuries and comments these may be related to sword belts. The red copper corrosion is also indicative of a post Medieval date.
