STRAP END

Unique ID: NMS-B8D3C1

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

Fragment of a Late Saxon openwork copper alloy strap-end, both ends broken. One break truncates one rivet hole (and has removed a second) through the split end and close to one side, and the other cuts across the start of three longitudinal apertures. Below the split end there is a short solid length which ends two transverse ribs on both faces above the apertures. On one face there are nine punched ring-and-dots. None is visible on the other which is less well preserved.

Extant length and width 22mm x 21.8mm. Final quarter 10th - 11th century.

Similar pieces, with two or three apertures have been recorded elsewhere in Norfolk, with a strong bias towards the west of the county, at Barton Bendish (HER 17212), Burnham Market (HER 18496), Costessey (HER 5352 con. 6), East Walton (HER 29273), Grimston (HER 3579), Outwell (HER 41077, NMS-80C432), Ryston (HER 31096), Saham Toney (HER 4697, SF10306), Snettisham / Ingoldisthorpe (HER 34531), Sporle with Palgrave (HER 1058), Swanton Abbott (HER 50080, NMS-84DE91), West Acre (HER 3953; HER 31175, NMS-FD7725) and West Winch (HER 52685, NMS-FFD3D3). Finds from other counties include examples from Suffolk at Mutford (NMS-6381F4), Elmswell (SF-690346) and Great Barton (SF-043AB3). One from Aldwincle, Northamptonshire, has been dated to 300 - 1500 AD (NARC-B3D792).

Previously identified as Late Roman to Early Saxon.
