Medieval (late 12th to 13th centuries) harness pendant: the copper alloy pendant is sub-square with an integral elongated arm protruding from the centre of the upper edge. The arm has a broken upper edge which is not recent and probably terminated with a loop originally. The outer face of the pendant is decorated with a high-relief shield with an indistinguishable design which is partially composed of six vertical lines of varying lengths and thickness. This design is coated with a dark grey coating, otherwise the surface has traces of a mid green patina and is heavily abraded. The reverse of the pendant is undecorated. The pendant measures 18.31mm in length 12.34mm wide and 3.02mm thick. It weighs 2.12g.
The artefact is probably a Medieval harness pendant, which were popular between the 12th and 14th centuries. Larger square examples are illustrated in Ashley (2002), Figure 19 which date to the early 13th to early 14th centuries, however smaller square pendants are dated to the 12th to 13th centuries (Ashley, 2002; Figure 9) but these have slightly more detailed designs, therefore the record example probably dates to the late 12th to 13th centuries.
