STEELYARD WEIGHT

Unique ID: PUBLIC-752051

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

A Steelyard weight made from lead alloy, date uncertain, Roman - 18th Century. It is cylindrical with a rounded top and a slightly hollow base. There are the remains of an iron suspension loop on the top. Steelyard weights are very difficult to distinguish from various other weights used throughout all periods and so they are very difficult to date when found as stray finds.

Height 28.85mm, Diameter 23.07mm Weight 95.6gms

Compare PUBLIC-949F52.

The FLO adds that the mass of 95.6g with most of the iron loop missing is likely to correspond to either one third of a Roman pound (libra) at c.109g (Biggs and Withers, Lead Weights, 2000, page 12), or to one quarter of a Medieval pound of 15 ounces in either the Mercentile or Avoirdupois systems at 109g or 106g (Egan, The Medieval Household, 1998, page 302).
