A copper alloy dumbell toggle probably of Roman date, AD 50 - 300. There are also Iron Age toggles, but this one has more in common with Roman examples. It is shaped like two globular spheres joined by a waisted band. There are no collars on this example. There is a rough hollow on one face, across both spheres. This is probably a bubble formed during the casting process. It has rounded edges and a rough surface. It is probably evidence of a mis-cast. The toggle has still been finished and has a smooth grey green patina. It is 18.3mm long, 11.1mm wide and 9.6mm thick. 7.63g. These objects are discussed in the PAS Roman and Iron Age Training Notes (unpublished) by Sally Worrell.
