A fragment of a substantial lead-alloy or pewter vessel, possibly a dish or plate dating to the third or fourth century AD. The fragment comprises part of the rim and body which has been distorted. The inner surface of the fragment is decorated with three parallel grooves marking out the rim from the body. The fragment measures 28mm in length, 33mm in width and a maximum of 7mm in thickness. It weighs 18.1g.
Compare the profile of this fragment with the typology of dishes illustrated by Lee (2009, 208, Fig. 96 and 210, Fig. 98). If the identification as a Roman dish is correct, it would represent the northernmost example from the province when compared with the sample collected by Lee (Lee 2009, 71, Fig. 23). He notes that although most examples are third and fourth century in date, pre-3rd century assemblages are known from London and elsewhere (Lee 2009, 75).
