A cast lead alloy spindle whorl, Coppergate type B1, of unknown date, but possibly AD 850 - 1500. It is discoid and flat, with a central perforation of diameter 10.2mm. There is no decoration. The whorl has a pale cream patina. It is 28.7mm in diameter and 6.9mm thick. It weighs 29.59gm.
Compare whorls illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25, figure 2.18. Whorls of this shape were used from the Iron Age onwards, but the size of the central perforation may indicate a late Early Medieval date onwards.
