Post Medieval (mid 17th to early 18th century) lead cloth seal of the Norwich Weavers' Company. The seal is composed of two sub-circular discs linked with an integral ribbon joining the discs. The ribbon is folded in half, thereby the two discs lay over each other. One disc has an integral stud which passes through the perforation in the second disc. Both discs have then been flattened and both faces stamped with different legends. One face reads NO/RWI/CH and the other (which is incomplete) reads [ ]STN/[ ]R[ ]/W. The surface of the seal has oxidised forming a mottled cream/beige colour. It measures 21.05mm long, 20.85mm wide and 4.37mm thick. It weighs 5.24g.
Cloth seals were in use between the 14th and 18th centuries as a form of quality control. The initials on the reverse are those of the twelve wardens of the Norwich Weavers' Company for one year between 1650 and 1705 (Egan 1994, 46).
