A Medieval silver penny of Henry III (AD 1216 - 1272), dating from December AD 1217 - AD 1218, Class 6c3. Mint of York, issued by Peres. See North (1994) number 976/3 on page 222. The mint signiture is EVERy.
This mint signiture is recorded in "The J. P. Mass Collection of English Short Cross Coins, 1180-1247: Vol 56 (Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles)", see plate 70 and numbers 1880 & 1881. The coin appears to be a die match with number 1881. It can also be die linked to the reverse of 1880, the obverse of 1882 and the obverse CM.1290-2001 in the Fitzwilliam Museum.
Dr Martin Allen has commented that British Numismatic Journal 33 (1964), John Brand, 'Some Short Cross questions' (p.67), notes that the specific dies for this class were supplied to the York mint on 3rd December AD1217, so this coin will have been struck sometime thereafter, but not after AD1218 as that is when the coinage of class 7a commenced.
The coin is worn between 6 and 9 o'clock on the obverse, and between 2 and 5 o'clock on the reverse. There is also a scratch on the obverse from the inner circle, over the hair to the face at the 3 o'clock position. The coin has unusually thick and straight edges.
The coin is 17.8mm diameter, 0.9mm thick and 1.46g.
