An incomplete, copper alloy, Crescent Type Aesica brooch of the Late Iron Age to Roman period, dating from c. AD 40 - c. AD 80.
Around 50% of the brooch remains, the spring, pin, foot and catch plate are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.
The brooch is broadly rectangular in plan and broadly C shaped in section. The wings project from either side of the brooch, forming a T shape. In the centre of each wing is a circular rivet protruding from the brooch, these rivets can be seen in the semi circular depression on the reverse of the wings, and may have held the spring in place or may be evidence of reuse as a mount. At each end of the wings is a semi circular end cap each with a semi circular perforation which would have held the axis bar, now missing. At the front of the brooch is an integral C shaped protrusion down the centre, which tapers out from the top to form a broadly circular plate which then tapers in to where it joins to the back plate. Below this protrusion is a convex, broadly circular plate which forms a hump from the wings down to a break at the base. There is a groove at the top where this plate joins with the wings. There is no evidence of further decoration on the front of the brooch. The reverse is also undecorated and concave or C shaped in section at the wings and at the main body of the brooch.
The brooch measures 27.8 mm in length and is 29.7 mm wide at the wings and is 21.3 mm wide at the plate (main body of the brooch). It has a maximum thickness of 14.1 mm and the plate is 4.9 mm thick. It weighs 18.7 g.
The brooch is a mid green to brown in colour with an uneven surface patina. There is some evidence of corrosion on the surface of the brooch. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil has resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. A similar example has been illustrated in Hattatt (2000), page 311, Fig 170, No 70, however this example has a flat back plate rather than a concave one. Other similar examples have also been recorded on the database, including IOW-6CD101, LVPL-2C27D6 and GLO-FF9AA6. No exact parallel was found at time of recording.
