BUCKLE

Unique ID: LVPL95

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A copper alloy double looped buckle of Medieval date. The object is rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object is centrally curved in profile with recurved ends. Each outside edge of the object has a series of rabbets with four widthways grooves.

A very similar example is illustrated by Whitehead (1996, page 77; no. 476), who dates it to the 15th century and suggests it may be a buckle for armour. However, a buckle of similar form is also illustrated by Egan & Pritchard (1991, pages 97-98; no. 443) which was excavated from a context dating from between 1270 and 1350 AD.
