A post-medieval cast copper alloy crotal bell complete with iron suspension ring and hook. The bell is divided into two hemispheres by a prominent ridge which runs around the centre of the bell. The upper hemisphere is undecorated with two large sound holes. A semi-circular loop extends up from the top of the upper hemisphere. The curve of the bell continues under the loop aperture suggesting it was made using a detachable 'sprue-piece', this method was introduced in the 17th century. A rusty iron ring goes through the loop (the ring has abutting ends), an integral hook continues from the top of the ring. The loop is 18.4mm wide by 12.4mm high. To one sides of the loop is an incuse number 4, indicating the size of the bell.

The lower hemisphere houses the large sound slot. The remains of the iron pea survive inside the bell. The lower hemisphere has been decorated with the characteristic sun-burst design. Four sets of double incised lines, forming four U-shapes make up the design. There are four in each half of the hemisphere, either side of the sound hole. Next to the sound hole a double incised line marks out a semi-circle on either side of the sound hole. Inside the two semi-circles are the letters R and W.

The metal survives in a good condition. It is smooth and is a mid green-brown colour. Lengh; 54.0mm excluding hook,( 65.6mm including hook. ) Circumference 55.5mm Weight;164.38gms

The initials represent the name Robert Wells (the 1st or 2nd). The Wells foundry was in Aldbourne (Wiltshire) and was a family concern casting chuch bells and rumbler bells of all sizes from 1760 to 1826 with the initials R/W although their moulds were acquired by later foundaries and may have been used after this date.
