A c.1250 - c.1400 incomplete cast copper-alloy sub-rectangular object assumed to be a strap-loop (Egan and Pritchard 1991) and an incomplete sheet copper-alloy plate, the front and reverse of which is decorated with a border of addorsed triangles; though interpretation as a buckle is recorded (Marshall C 1986). This plate has two transversely placed rivet-holes, each retaining a separate copper-alloy rivet, near the strap end, and a larger diameter circular hole near the frame end. Apart from its incompleteness, it is in good condition with an even green patina. Filing striations on both sides of the frame. Dimensions of frame - length 13.52 mm, width 18.39 mm, thickness 1.40 mm; dimensions of plate - 29.29 mm, width 11.70 mm; thickness 0.40 mm; overall dimensions - length 40.70 mm, weight 2.6 grams.
Notes:
Conserved with BTA/meths and incralac by Brian Read.
The known record does not have an example actually found in situ on a strap for either function and likewise no other is known attached to a separate plate. The large circular hole may have been suitable for a lost pin, therefore suggesting possible use or reuse as a buckle. Conversely, did these so-called strap loops have another but presently unknown function or perhaps actually were buckles or even multi-functioned as both buckles and strap-loops?
