A complete lead or lead alloy probable token or weight of the Late Medieval to Post Medieval Period, dating from c. AD 1400 - c. AD 1800.
The token is broadly oval in plan and D shaped in section. The obverse depicts a segmented design resembling a wheel, with eight raised spokes around a central pellet all surrounded by a raised circular border (Powell Type: 3), the design forms a dome. The reverse is slightly concave but plain and undecorated.
The token measures 21.6 mm ini diameter and is 8.4 mm thick. It weighs 14.2 g (0.5 oz).
The token is a mid grey in colour and has an uneven patina.
Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail.
Lead tokens are a frequently occurring find, with a variety of different designs. Tokens like this, were used as tallies or as replacement low denomination coinage during the Medieval and Post Medieval periods.
