An incomplete Roman (AD 50-150) copper alloy Dolphin brooch with hinge mechanism, missing its pin. It measures 61.51 mm and weighs 17.32 g.
The wings are tubular with a span of 23.98 mm. To the reverse is the slot to hold the hinged pin. The iron axis bar has corroded, consequently the wings have expanded.
The bow extends from the front of the wings, slighly raised, at this point measuring 9.20 mm (width) x 10.90 mm (depth). The bow curves forwards and for a small part of its length (~ 12.00 mm) has a central raised vertical rib. The bow is D-shaped in section. The bow narrows to 2.44 mm at the foot.
To the reverse the triangular catchplate extends 13.65 mm thick behind the bow.
