A copper-alloy frame from a Medieval single-loop buckle.
The D-shaped frame widens towards the centre of its outer side and its upper surfaces slope downwards and outwards. The flat-sectioned pin, which has been loosely looped around the offset axis bar, tapers to a point. Traces of gilding are visible on the upper surface of the frame.
Length: 18.9mm; width: 22.2mm; depth/thickness: 6.6mm. Weight: 3.03g.
Buckle frames of this shape were found at Meols, Merseyside, where they were dated from the late 13th to early 14th century (Egan, in Griffiths et al. 2007: 88, nos. 472-491); however, it is noteworthy that this form of frame was often paired with an enamelled plate in the Limoges style (see PAS record NMS-A1AA21), suggesting the possibility of an early 13th century date.
