Cast, lead palm guard, probably dating from the 17th-20th century (c. AD 1600 - c. AD 1950). It is a rounded oval, with convex and concave surfaces. The convex side has two small oval depressions near the centre. These are believed to have been used to push a needle through a tough material. Leather workers' palm guards are discussed in an article in Gordon Bailey's 'Detector Finds 2', 1993, pages 64-5. Dating of these artefacts is very difficult; the earliest examples seem to date from the 17th century, although they may have been in use right through to the 20th century (Bailey, 1993, page 64). This example has a patchy, cream patina. It is 74.17mm long, 50.82mm wide and 7.25mm thick. 134.8g.
