An incomplete cast copper-alloy brooch fragment dating to the Roman period. The fragment consists of the terminal end of the brooch with catchplate on the reverse; the remainder is now missing. The fragment is triangular in form, tapering towards the rounded terminal edge and the top edge of the fragment in old breaks. The front and reverse faces do not appear to have any decoration. The fragment has a light to mid green patina.
Although it is difficult to identify the type of brooch by its foot alone, it is likely that it dates from the Roman period and is a fragment from either a knee brooch type, dating to the second century, or a wing-and-fantail type dating to the first century AD. It is less likely that the fragment could come from the base of an early Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch as, although these brooches have flared terminals to their feet, the catchplate is always above the terminal.
This fragment measures 17.82mm in length, 15.60mm in width, 1.18mm in thickness and 1.78g in weight.
