A fragment of the base of a Roman Samian Ware vessel, probably of East Gaulish manufacture dating to AD 175 - 225. The fragment consists of the base of a vessel, probably a bowl or dish. The base has a diameter of 77.23 mm. The broken remains of the vessel then extend from the base which has a width of 108.4 mm at the widest point. On what would have been the inside of the vessel are what appears to be the letters XVVIVEX - the makers mark. The letters have pellets between them. The letters have been stamped horizontally and are contained within a circle of cross hatched incisions. The fragment has a mid orange colour with reddish-orange slip remaining in places.
Geoffrey Dannell, a Roman pottery specialist suggests "The dish looks as if it comes from one of the "East Gaulish" (German) kilnsites, like Rhinzabern, and may be a Walters 79R. Which should date it to the last quarter of C2 - first quarter C3".
The fragment measures: diameter: 108.4mm, 77.23 mm diameter of the base, thickness 6.44 mm Weight: 88.75 grams.
