An incomplete copper alloy headstud brooch of Roman date. The head of the brooch is comprised of rectangular wings the reverse of which act as a double lug hinge mechanism which retains the heavily corroded axis bar though the pin no longer remains. The front of the wings are decorated with recessed lozenge cells, two to each wing, which retain blue enamel. The degree of wear makes the exact nature of the decoration on the wings difficult to determine.
An integral square sectioned bow extends centrally from between the wings tapering to terminate in a worn break. A triangular recess is present at the apex of the bow which would presumably have housed a separate headstud feature. A raised spine is present above this on the head of the brooch. The bow is undecorated with the worn remains of the catchplate projecting from the reverse.
The metal has a dark brown patina and is worn. The brooch is 30.9mm long, 26.9mm wide, 8.8mm thick and weighs 15.3g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Hattatt, p.333, fig.192 and are dated to the 2nd Century AD.
