Incomplete glass bottle seal, ovate in plan and slightly domed in profile on the reverse of the seal. The obverse has the name 'Walter Maunder / [1]713' in relief. The seal is made of dark green glass and would have attached to an onion-shaped bottle that would have contained wine.
A Mr. Walter Maunder had his son Walter baptised at St. Mary's Church, Truro, on 13th January 1715. In 1715 a Walter Maunder was in possession of Phippens House, Truro. The seal may possibly commemorate the marriage of Walter Maunder to his wife Mary, although no marriage record could be located in the Courtney Library.
Margeson (1993) illustrates a similar seal with a name and the date of 1722 on an onion shaped bottle on page 99, fig.65, no.609.
