A complete post-medieval biface copper-alloy coin weight for a gold Louis d'or (1640-1709) of Louis XIV of France (1643-1715), dating to c. 1690 (Withers & Withers 1995, 34). In England this coin was known as a 'pistol' or 'pistole'. This weight was probably produced in Britain (Withers & Withers 1995, 31, 34, 46-47, 70).
Obverse: LVD . XIIII . D G FR. ET NA. REX; Bust of Louis XIV facing right
Reverse: 1 / PISTOL / W below three fleur-de-lis
The full weight of a Louis d'or was 6.75g. The mass of this weight is just under this while showing very little signs of wear. There is slight corrrosion showing on the obverse face. The designs are struck slightly off centre on both faces.
