BUCKLE

Unique ID: HAMP-AD242C

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation

An incomplete, broken and bent medieval (1250-1400) copper alloy buckle, perhaps from a spur. It probably originally had an integral plate. The buckle comprises a single oval frame, broken at the strap bar, and fragments of a possible integral plate, including a hole for the pin which is now open. The frame is D-shaped in cross-section, being flat to the reverse, and has decoration in the form of a tri-lobed projection in the centre of the outer edge. There is a small lobed knop either side of the strap bar. The fragment is now 18.1mm long, 14.7mm wide and 1.7mm thick. It weighs 1.03g.

Notes:

The buckle fragment is similar to spur buckles and buckles with decorative integral plates illustrated in Whitehead (2003) pp.33-4, which the author gives a suggested date of 1250-1400. A possible similar example with trefoil decoration on the database is NMS-A495F6.
