A post-Medieval lead-alloy lid from a jug.
The discoidal lid is largely intact, but there is some damage to the outer edge. Two concentric grooves decorate the upper surface; these are overlain by the lozenge-shaped base plate of the hinge, the upper surface of which is decorated by a moulded fleur-de-lis. At its outer end this plate extends into a T-shaped thumb-rest which angles forwards. From the back of the junction between the thumb-rest and base plate extends a circular loop, which would originally have slotted between two lugs on the now-missing handle, forming a hinge.
Width/diameter of lid: 50.6mm; total length: 63.6mm; height: 19.5mm. Weight: 39.1g.
Tankards and jugs with hinged lids were popular items throughout the Late Medieval and post-Medieval periods, and this piece is therefore difficult to date precisely. Ruempol and van Dongen illustrate a range of jugs with similar lids, with close parallels dating from the 14th (1991: 56) and 16th centuries (ibid. 157); however, a cautiously wide date range is assigned to this piece, pending further research.
