A fragment of Post Medieval stoneware, possibly produced in Frechen, dating to the 17th century. The fragment is from the body of a stoneware vessel of uncertain type, though probably a jar or bottle. The clay is light grey with a brown slip on the external surface only, a salt glaze covers both sufaces. On the external surface is a deers head within a circular border. The deer has a collar which is formed of either frills or leaves. Beneath the decoration are traces of the initials of the owner, in serif font. Without the rest of the vessel it is impossible to determine the full extent of the inscription.
This type of stoneware was produced in Germany from the late 16th and into the 17th century, before the same sort of ceramic began to be produced in Britain.
