A small gilt copper alloy annular brooch of Medieval (1200-1400) date. The frame is circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section, with the reverse flat but angled upwards towards the inner edge. The upper surface of the frame has moulded decoration and is divided into eight sections of equal size: four raised segments alternate with three which have 'bramble' decoration, being stamped with multiple tiny annular stamps in longitudinal rows. The remaining segment houses the constriction for the pin. A circumferential groove decorates the side of the frame. The cast copper alloy pin has an oval loop, rectangular in cross section and a large square collar from where, circular in cross-section, it extends c.10mm to a blunt point. Significant amounts of gilding remain on both surfaces of the frame and the pin. The frame has a diameter of 17.7mm (internal 10.5mm) and is 3.1mm thick. In total the pin is 16.8mm long, with a maximum width and thickness of 3.8mm x 4.0mm. The brooch weighs 2.67g.
Notes:
Two very similar gilt annular brooches have been recorded on the database as NMS-A920A3 and PUBLIC-243B03, both of which are dated to the 13th or 14th century.
