A copper-alloy casket key, dating from the Medieval period.
The bow is sub-oval in plan, of oval cross section and, because of wear, narrower at the top. There is no collar separating the bow from the stem, the latter of which is of flattened-oval section and widens towards a hollow tip. The C-shaped bit is set on the underside of the tip.
Length: 37.7mm; height: 13.2mm; thickness/width: 4.5mm. Weight: 5.56g.
Several similar casket keys were found in excavations in Winchester, in layers dating from the 12th to 14th centuries (Goodall, in Biddle 1990: 1024-1036).
